Unit 1/2 evaluation 1.7

When this course started I had a very different idea of what I wanted to do for work when I'm older, when I started I was set on making documentaries and factual programs, through my many experiences I've had on this course I have discovered that that's no longer the career path I want to go down. After working on a few creative projects I've discovered that I really enjoy writing.

The first thing we did this year was produce a short 5 minute film as a class. After a lot of brainstorming we decided on a story of some bullies luring some kids into the forest to murder them. This was a really good learning experience because it taught me to fully listen to everyone else's idea and comprise to get an idea that everyone likes. This is a very important quality when it comes to the creative industry because it makes you a lot easier to work with. After we figured out the idea and the script was written we went out to film. This part of the process could've gone a lot better, to start with it was smooth but it soon descended into no one really knowing what to do next or how to film certain shots, despite this after a short break to talk things through we were back on track. As this was the first time we all worked together it took us a little time to really work well together I believe that's we had some troubles shooting at the start.

I feel that I learnt a lot about the industry and myself while doing work experience for the Pavilion theatre. I went into this course having an interest in editing, I wanted to develop my editing ability throughout this course because I thought it could be a possible career path once I leave. This project taught me that editing isn't the right path for me, although I did learn a lot about adobe premiere and how it works I severely underestimated the amount of time it takes to edit something that long. There were points when I enjoyed it but it was also very frustrating, although a lot of the issues I ran into whilst editing have helped my general problem solving skills, thinking about problems at different angles. I Also learnt sometime about the industry as well, in a professional setting I didn't realise how much pressure there is for actors to not mess up, if they are constantly messing up there is a lot more work to the editor to do.

The work experience with did with the E-sports team was massively impactful. We had to interview the different teams and ask them about their teams and about the games they play, I hadn't really ever interviewed anyone before this so it really helped develop those skills. Also for the project we had to interview a certain amount of people in a certain amount of time which really made us work together and get it done, This really developed my skills to effectively work as a part of a team.

When creating my logo I used a website called Tailor brand, this website is a really easy to use logo creation tool that really helped me. I settled on "INHOUSE" for the name of my company because it's a play on words. In-house being a term used to describe a company that does all of its work internally, and my last name being Childerhouse. While designing my logo I learnt a lot about what different colours mean and how important they are in branding. How every colour is supposed to make the audience feel a certain way, after a lot of thinking I settled on orange because it's supposed to signify friendliness and vitality. Also font is very important, I went with a simple bold font because I thought it looked professional and simple. I also learnt how important having a good social media presence and website are. Interacting with people on social media will connect a business to it's audience and will make them seem a lot more approachable. Having a professional looking website is so important because it is likely to be the first thing someone sees of your business and if it doesn't look good a lot of people won't give it a second look.

As a part of the course I had to do a lot of research about a lot of different things, I learnt a lot about rules and regulations in the creative industry and things I'd have to do if I were to set up a business. For example I learnt a lot about different regulatory bodies and which ones I need to follow in order to actually have my programmes seen. I also learnt a lot about intellectual property and copyright laws and how important it is to be fully aware of them, plagiarism can get you in a lot of trouble. It's also very important to make sure all of my content is also protected. As well as intellectual property it's really important to make sure that if you're filming on private property you have all of the correct releases signed, otherwise it'd be illegal to film there. A similar thing goes for talent, everyone on screen news to sign a talent release saying they consent to being on film. All of this research taught me a lot, like how much actually goes into making a film and how it's important to be absolutely clear on all of the rules so you can avoid getting in trouble.

As part of our research we also had to estimate finances for our business, I found it really interesting to see how much money it costs to set things up and different way to getting funded. Doing all of the financial research really helped me visualise my company and realistically what I'd have to do to get it really going. I also got a lot of feedback for the financial part of my business plan as well, this was really good to get some one in the industry and who's actually had to get funded before, the first hand perspective really helped a lot.

In closing, throughout units 1 and 2 I have learnt about the creative industry and how to effectively and safely create a business, as well as this I have learnt a lot about my self, my skill set and my interests. I started this year being primarily being interested in editing and factual programming. throughout all of the experiences I've had this year my interests have shifted. I've discovered that I really like writing and story telling, I'm glad I had all of the experiences I have because they've made me discover what I really like to do and what I want to pursue in my life
