Evaluation of 5 minute short
I think a lot about the project worked well, for example the very start of the process when we were conceptualising the idea we worked very well together sharing ideas and blending them all together so that everyone liked the final idea. I also think everyone knew what role they had which made the whole process flow quite well. Everyone in the group was also very invested into the idea of the film so that made it easier to get along and get on with the work.
Something that was good and bad was how quickly we filmed most of it, filming it quickly allowed us to spend more time editing and picking music etc. But it felt like we rushed it a little bit which I felt made it lose a bit of the passion behind it, everyone being in such a rush led to some frustration when we didn’t get a shot right on the first take. When we film the next film we should put less pressure on each other to get it right the first take, if we were more patient, they’d be a lot less tention between everyone. Something else that we could have down better is everyone should have read the script more than once, because when we were on set it was obvious that some people (including me) didn’t really know what was going to happen when, this was also probably another reason why there was some frustration on set. If we were all more familiar with the shot list and the script, we would have all known what scene we were filming when. I don't think anyone in our group had ever been on set for that much time before, because of this nearer to the end of the day everyone started to lose a bit of concentration, we couldn’t have done anything different at the time but we’ve learnt from that experience and will know how to stay focused on the shoot in later projects.
We could have been a bit more organised with the equipment as well, we had to walk all the way back to the college to get more batteries for the audio equipment which halted all filming for a little, this isn’t really something that we did wrong because no one knew that the batteries would last such a short amount of time but we know this going into the future so we’ll make sure to bring spares on set with us. Also, because we were so rushed there were some props that we forgot to get, for example, we were supposed to use fake blood in the murder scene but because we didn’t have much time no one got any.
I think the final product turned out quite good, considering how little time we had to make it, also I said it would have been better to take a bit more time with the filming process I am proud of how fast we got it done, I also think some of the shots look really good, for example the shot of the hand on the floor of the forest looks really good.
If we were to film again there are a few things that I would change about the film, for example I think we could have gotten other people to act so there could be more of us behind the camera, this could have made the shoot go ab it smoother. I really like the music choices for the most part but there are a few parts that I’d change the music to, for example the very last scene where the murder is hanging up the news paper clipping, I think the music for that scene could have been a bit more dramatic. Because the film had to be around 5 minutes long, we ended up cutting quite a few shots out, which had to be done it’s just a shame because there was a cut scene which I think develops the characters more. I also would have shot it a nighttime I think this would have made it a lot spookier and tense, the original plan was to film at nighttime but we decided to film in the day time because of time restrictions and it would have been a lot more difficult to organise everyone and equipment.
