Research task one

SWOT stands for: Strengths weaknesses, opportunities and threats. This is a way to evaluate your company. using this technique will help define your companies strengths and weaknesses. PESTEL stands for : Political, economic, social, technological, environmental and legal. Is a framework used analyse macro environmental factors that may impact an organisations performance. This is especially useful for a new business. PESTEL and SWOT are often used together to produce a clear understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of a ny given business.

There are a lot of current factors that would heavily impact businesses in the UK, The economical side of things would be massively impacted due to corona virus because they wouldn't really be able to open due the the rules put in place by the government, it's much easier for online businesses to operate because there's no face to face interaction. Many businesses are being forced to reinvent themselves to keep afloat. This also goes into the legal issues, because the rules of shops being open have been contradicted and are so vague that physical shops might accidentally be breaking the rules without knowing about it. There will also be technological factors in the current climate of the UK, for example businesses and ventures will have to develop an online presence due to not having people visit their shops in real life, this will be a lot easier for businesses that are already online but it'll be a necessary change that all businesses will have to do in order to keep a float.

Brexit will have quite a large impact on the creative industry, for example, it'll a lot more complicated to travel to Europe, everyone will need visas, this could impact the amount of work a company gets, which could mean they won't be able to afford to stay open. The fact that they can't travel could make it much harder to shoot some scenes, if they know of a place they want to film a scene that's in Europe. It would also make it much harder to work with/ collaborate who live in the EU. Overseas talents has always played a big part in the creative industry and because of Brexit it'll become much harder to meet up with people from the EU. This will also have a massive impact on talent from Europe trying to get work in the UK.

There's a lot happening in the UK at the moment, corona virus will change the way the creative industry works forever. Lots of businesses have gone under because of it,  especially live music venues, they can't make any money at the moment because of the social distancing rules. Although the government have set up a recovery fund that more that 1300 arts and cultural organisations are benefiting from, this is a great support system for the organisations that are getting it, the problem is that there are so many more organisations that aren't getting it and are really struggling through this period of time. A lot of smaller independent venues and businesses aren't getting access to funds because they generally make less money than bigger venues anyway so in the eyes of the government they're less important.

Personal SWOT analysis

Strengths:

I've made documentaries before so I know generally how things are shot and how things are framed. I'm also a massive fan of documentaries and have watched hundreds, because of all of this time watching them i know in depth how they are structured and the pacing of them, this has also taught me how to approach people with questions and get the best answers out of them, it's very important to build a trusting relationship with people you're filming in a documentary, this will make them feel more comfortable and more like to give better answers.

Weaknesses:

I haven't had a lot of experience in making documentaries, even though I have watched a lot of documentaries I haven't really had a chance to put all of my knowledge into practice because of a lack of opportunities and funds. this brings me onto another one of my weaknesses, I don't have any money, this really limits my options to what I can do because I cant travel very far I can't afford nice expensive equipment, this would make it harder to get work because I  wouldn't be able to produce massively high quality documentaries.

Opportunities

I think there's a gap in the market for a factual program production company in Norwich, I've found one other one which hasn't posted anything on their social medias since late last year, There doesn't seem to be much competition in the area which is great because that means there'll potentially be more work for me and my company.

Threats

There are quite a few potential threats, for example, there aren't many documentary production companies locally at the moment but there could be some emerging at the same time as me, this would mean that it would be potentially harder to get work because there would be competition. Also if the company completes a piece of work and the client isn't happy with it it could lead to the company getting a bad name, this could mean a lack of work in the future.
