Research task 7 : Regulatory Frameworks
A regulatory body is a company that regulates different types of content, for example Ofcom regulate TVs channels whereas PEGI are mainly known for regulating things like video games. Their frame works are the rules they in force on content to determine what rating it should get.
Ofcom are a regulatory body that that regulates TV and radio, they also handle a lot of complaints if the public feel like someone has broken some rules or done something unethical on TV. The framework that Ofcom goes by states " [the audience] should be able to trust what why see and hear". This is especially important in today's political climate. It also says they are taking "appropriate steps to avoid airing content that might cause unjustified offence". I think this is really great because it's essentially saying they don't want to offend anyone, but people might be offended if it's at the expense of entertainment and or news.
The ASA is the regulatory body used to regulate advertisement in the UK. They respond to complaints from consumers and businesses. They have to rules sets for advertising Non-broadcast code and Broadcast code. Both of them are quite similar for example: no adverts can show underage drinking ( or +anything illegal for that matter). Most of the rules are in place to protect children. TV aren't allowed ti use shock tactics or be overly loud, they also need to be aware of epileptic people.
The IPSO is the regulatory body for newspapers and magazines in the UK. Some newspapers in the UK (The Sun, Daily mail) are infamously very untruthful, So it's important that the regulatory body has strict rules to prevent this as much as possible. One of IPSO's rules is accuracy, this includes misleading headlines, stories without proper context etc. "A fair opportunity to reply to significant inaccuracies should be given, when reasonably called for". This Is a really good rule because it allows people to clear their if some mis-information has been spread about them. There are many different rules, such as rules around harassing people, respectfully reporting suicide cases, there shouldn't be any racial profiling etc.
The BBFC are the regulatory board for films that have theatrical and or DVD releases in the UK. The framework is a bit different for the BBFC, in the fact that they have a rating system going from U ( Suitable for all) to R18 which is exclusively pornography. There are various boundaries for each of the rating, for examples the higher the rating goes the more graphic content is allowed, in U sex scenes will have to be incredibly mild, ( either completely absent or just referenced to) kissing is allowed. whereas if in the 18 section you'd be able to show a lot more.
PEGi is the regulatory body for video games in the UK, they share a similar system to the BBFC where they have a rating system, this time going from 3 to 18, similar rules apply, games with PEGI 3 should have not bad language, nothing at all frightening and only a mild form of violence in a comical context. Whereas games with PEGI can depict gross violence, killing without a motive, romanticising the use of illegal substances, explicit sexual activity
