Research task 8
There any many different type of funding for media productions, for example production companies could invest in a film and take a cut of the revenue that the film makes, although it isn’t easy to get funded by a production company because films are a very risky business, many films flop and don’t profit. This goes for all types of funding, it’s not easy. A relatively new way of funding media productions would be crowd funding. Websites such as Kick-starter and Gofundme allow anyone with an idea to upload a project explaining why they want people to donate to them. This idea has only come to be a viable way of funding in the last decade or so. It has been very good for making lesser known talents to create projects of their own. This is a great way for film students to get their ideas known and noticed by larger investors. But he down side of crowd funding is that there are many people who try it so it’s difficult to stand out.
It's important to public liability insurance for any business, this will protect you from being sued by people for things like injury or property damage. Business equipment insurance is very important for a creative business because they tend to have quite expensive equipment like cameras and microphones this would be especially important if you;re filming somewhere things might get broken. A company called Well dunn offers digital and creative insurance as a package. There aren't many insurances that exist because of the creative industry but there are many that would help.
There are many pros and cons for working at home, for example, a pro is you wouldn't need to pay for an office, you wouldn't have to travel to work either which would save time and money. this is a very viable option and a lot of people in the creative sector do work from home. But there also some cons as well, for example, one of the main things about making in the creative industry is making contacts and making contacts at home will be harder than if you worked in a social space. Also working from home could get quite lonely, this could affect your mental and your productivity.
Business rates are a tax on buildings that are used for non domestic reasons (businesses) this also applies if use your home for non-domestic purposes.
I think the location of your business definitely does matter, depending on your business, if you do something more practical like filming or recording something it's best to base your business where the most work can be found, big cities are good places, like London or Manchester. But there are other jobs in the creative industry that are less restricting, people like writers and editors can more easily work from home because these are jobs can be done by one person sometimes, also a team of writers can easily work over the internet where it's impossible to have a film crew film something over the internet.
