Notes for presentation

  • Summary- INHOUSE productions are all about bringing lesser-known issues into the spotlight. The product I produce will be of a professional standard,  as the business expands and grows so will the quality of the programs. We aim to be a very trusted and reliable source of information. I think relationships are very important for making effective documentaries because they make the people in the documentary more relaxed and trusting.

  • Current status- Although I have very big ambitions, it would be impossible to jump straight to making massive budget Worldclass documentaries. So we’ll start off producing local documentaries focused on personal issues.

  • Showreel- I’ve made a short show reel to show how future documentaries could look like.

  • Vision statement- My vision statement is short and sweet, and it gets to the point. That’s what makes a good vision statement. If it’s too long it can seem a bit like you don’t really know what you want for the company. It's important to be completely un-biased on all the issues we tackle, even if my beliefs are proven wrong.

  • Genre of documentaries – Participatory documentaries tend to be more a lot more engaging because of the figure in front of the camera, with the hard-hitting nature of our documentaries I think having a likeable figure presenting will make people want to watch more.

  • Company logo - Advertising is so important for a new brand to get the name of their business out there, if a business has eye catching logos then they’ll be more likely to be successful. I’ve used orange for my logo to make it seem more trustworthy and welcoming.

  • Market research- If this isn’t done thoroughly enough and you don’t know your target audience exactly it results in spending money on marketing to the wrong type of people. That’s why I have conducted extensive research into my audience.

  • Survey- It is quite cheap to advertise on social media sites, it’s also quite straight forward, this survey proves that a younger audience is interested in my kind of documentaries, this will allow me to take advantage on advertising online. These charts are a great indicator as to how I should approach advertising As you can see most the responses use more than one social media platform. This will make advertising on these platforms very effective

  • Psychographic-

  • Social awareness- This is a great quality to have to understand an empathize with issues around the world

  • Independent judgement- another great quality because it shows someone has the ability to think for themselves and will stand up for what they believe in

  •  Anti-materialistic – This shows that they care about the wellbeing of people more than material goods, which shows empathy.

  • My product would appeal to all these characteristics, therefore that’s why the reformer is the main psychographic I’m marketing towards

  • Demographic and Psychographic – My last side shows that a younger audience will be an effective audience to market towards. My documentaries will also be marketed towards passionate people who really care about the subjects of the documentaries, people who seek to make the world a better place

  • Social media- it's very important to have a presence on social media these days it could greatly impact the successfulness of the business, it’s key to interact with an audience online to humanize the business. It would also be great for promoting projects and airing times, we could also pay to advertise on these platforms this would be good because it would have an incredibly high reach.

  • Social media advertisements – Twitter and Instagram have a built in system to run advertising campaigns on their platforms, these ads can also be targeted which means people who interact with similar things would see them,

  • Google ads- It’s relatively simple to set up and manage, it could get expensive but we could start off with a smaller cheaper campaign. The only issue with it is that the click through rates are usually very low, (roughly 3-6 percent) But click through rates aren’t everything, just getting the logo out there for people to see would impact the business positively. These are also targeted so people who google similar things or watch similar YouTube videos

  • Website- It's vital for a business to have professional looking website to direct customers to, I have carefully crafted my website to make it blend well with my logo and attract an audience. Links to all my social media accounts will be on my website so people visiting can easily find my other platforms. I have many different pages for my website which all have a specific purpose.

  • Team and management- I won’t be hiring anyone full time, I will hire freelance workers as and when I need them, I’m doing it this way because I won’t have to pay staff salaries. This is a benefit especially in my field because the amount of work will vary massively so paying people as and when I get work will be better and paying salaries. When INHOUSE gets bigger and bigger I might have to think about hiring people full time to make the work load easier to manage, to make this viable we’d have to have a very consistent work load

  •  Industry and competition- I've completed case studies on 3 different similar businesses to see how they run things and if I could do anything similar with my business to improve my odds. These case studies were very important because they helped me identify the USP for my own business and how I’m going to have my own identity as a brand.

  • Tin can Island – I Studied this business because they are based locally to me, I also would like to be based in Norwich in the beginning stages of my business. It was very important to look at a local company because they’ll be the closest competition to me. I can play off their disadvantages to stand out above them

  • Factory films - These were a good company to look at because they’ve worked with some large clients that I’d also potentially like to work with. Since doing the case study their website has gone down because they are rebranding, this makes it hard to see any of their previous works. They’re based in Brighton, so they won’t be too much of a threat to me.

  • Six-point Horizons- I studied this business because they make similar documentaries to me. The founder has had experience as a military photographer which is  great because he’s traveled the world and had experiences with interacting with people that most people wouldn’t get to. They also have a camera crew that can go anywhere within 24 hours which is very good because it would allow them to be some of the first people to film something. One thing that I did notice was that they don’t have a page where all of their past works are available, this would be good for the audience to get an idea of what the company is like.

  • Cashflow- Here you can see a finical chart I made it shows the in and out going for my business, as you can see the business will make around £7000 in its first year, as the business grows, I’d hope to expand and earn more.

  • Cultural policies- These are very important for my company; they can affect the way my business operates. Things like Brexit and corona virus would have both had massive impacts for my business, they both would have made it very hard to travel to different countries. I would have to acquire a work visa to get round Brexit but corona virus is a really difficult issue because it makes it almost impossible to travel. This is also another reason why my business would start off by making local documentaries.

  • Business type and tax- My business will be a sole trader business because I have weighed out the pros and cons and have decided that this is the best option for me, having full control and having no pressure from investors is a massive plus, we could be more private out our finances because as a limited business we’d have to publicly disclose our finances. Also, low start-up costs means we could star as soon as possible. A few cons are that we’d be liable for all of our debts, this means my personal belongings would be taken. It tends to be a lot harder to secure funding and it appears less pristine that limited companies.

  • Legislation and regulatory bodies I will mainly have to focus on Ofcom because that’s where my documentaries will be seen, this means I’ll have to follow ofcom rules in order to get my documentaries aired. This means that I might have to censor some of the content, this wouldn’t be ideal because I would like to keep it as real as possible. Ideally later it’d be great to have a theatrically released documentary and if that happens, I'd have to follow the BBFC rules because that the body that regulates films.
